Broadway Winners Hit The Wharton for 2008 Season

By Dan Tack

The Wharton Center 2008 season kicks off with a "wicked" start this July with Broadway blockbuster WICKED, a Wizard of Oz spin-off smash.  The show runs from July 16th to August 3rd and had a spectacular sell out performance during its first run at the Wharton.  WICKED tells the back story of the two witches featured in the popular film.

Bob Hoffman, Public Relations Manager at the Wharton, says, “Theater brings out art in ways other mediums can’t.”

November 4-9 the politically charged drama FROST/NIXON tells the tale of how British talk-show host David Frost achieved one of the most famous interviews of all time with President Richard Nixon.

The all time classic GREASE runs from December 9 to December 14th.  Time magazine’s 2007 number 1 pick of the year returns for another successful run at the Wharton with this Broadway hit.

In January, look for LEGALLY BLONDE to spice things up with some hilarious fun.

THE COLOR PURPLE rolls out in February 2009, bringing the works of Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker to the theater.  Featuring a mix of gospel, blues, jazz and ragtime, THE COLOR PURPLE spins the story of prevailing against all odds. Also beginning in February and running into March, SPRING AWAKENING is the teen-angst journey into adulthood that has really broken all the rules and brought a truly unique experience to the world of theater.

Hoffman says THE COLOR PURPLE and SPRING AWAKENING are definitely this year’s acts not to be missed.

Disney’s THE LION KING comes to the Wharton in March and runs for a full month, bringing the famous movie to life in one of Broadway’s most hailed shows.

“Theater touches everyone’s experiences in real life,” Hoffman says. “It touches people, it can change lives.”
