LANSING, MI — The Lansing City Clerk’s Office is extending service for receiving passport applications on Monday, June 10 from 5:30-7:30PM. For those who find it difficult to come to the City Clerk’s office during regular office hours or want to avoid paying for parking, they can walk in during this time on Monday, June 10 to apply for a new passport, or to renew an existing passport.  All persons applying for a passport must appear in person to apply, even if they are minors.

This is a new initiative for the upcoming months that will only appear on specific Mondays when City Hall is already open for Council Meetings. These dates include:

  • Monday, June 10, 24
  • Monday, July 24
  • Monday, August 12, 26
  • Monday, September 9, 30
  • Monday, October 14
  • Monday, November 18
  • Monday, December 2, 16

The Lansing City Clerk’s Office is located on the 9th Floor of City Hall at 124 W. Michigan Ave. The office aims to be as accessible as possible, offering passport forms, passport photo services, desks and seating to fill out forms, a small area for children to wait while attended by family, and men’s and women’s restrooms.

U.S. Citizens applying for a passport are reminded that the application process requires two payments: one to the US Department of State, which will be sent with the application, and must be made by check or money order. The second payment goes to the acceptance facility, which will be $35 for DS-11 forms. Applicants may have their passport photos taken during this event for $10.

The Department of State estimates that routine processing of an application will take 6-8 weeks, and expedited processing for an additional $60 will take 2-3 weeks. These processing times do not include shipping times to and from the Department of State. Applicants are encouraged to apply far in advance of their travel dates.

“I recommend that applicants first visit our passport web page at www.lansingmi.gov/Passports or call our office at 517-483-4133 to make sure that you have everything to make your application process as smooth as possible”, said City Clerk Chris Swope. “The paperwork can be confusing, but my staff is happy to walk you through it. We are expanding to offer this after-hours walk-in service to accommodate people who cannot apply during daytime business hours.”
