TURKISH  FESTIVAL SET FOR AUGUST 23

Great Lakes Society of Friendship and Culture continues to bring the  Turkish Culture to the people of Michigan. GLSFC is proud to organize another first in the Greater Lansing Area: Michigan Turkish Festival.
The festival will feature demonstrations of art, film, music and gourmet food, where participants will get the opportunity to celebrate, learn, and savor Turkish hospitality, culture, heritage and cuisine. Visitors will be able to browse and buy Turkish products, souvenirs and handicrafts, find travel information, participate in activities for children, view many authentic demonstrations and performances including live calligraphy and ebru (water marbling), sample Turkish cuisine, and do much, much more at the Festival.  Without leaving the comfort of your hometown, you will have a chance to vividly experience Turkey, the only country where two continents meet.

The festival will be on Saturday, August 23 from 11am to 6pm in Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. Bring your families and your friends for a day of music, art, great food and historical Turkish hospitality. For more information, contact GLSFC at info@glsfc.org or call Betul Bilgin at (517) 505 83 45.
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to savor Turkish culture and cuisine, so mark your calendars today!

Linda Baldwin-Herring, a teacher at Reo Elementary School and a member of Trinity AME Church, is featured in the September 2008 issue of Ebony Magazine, which is on newsstands now (Michelle Obama is on the cover). Herring is included in an article entitled, "HBCUs Link the Past, Present and Future" (located on page 154), which highlights family legacies and traditions of attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Herring, her mother, Doris Baldwin, and her two daughters, Carah Herring (Everett High School Class of 2001) and Chemaye Herring (Everett High School Class of 2004) are featured in a full-page photograph that appears along with the article. They all graduated from Bennett College for Women, which is located in Greensboro, NC.

Editor’s Notes:  I challenge everyone who reads this column to buy this copy of Ebony.  You may reconnect!
