“The Tooth Fairy” is a fun and light kid’s fable, that’s so breezy it could blow away like Pixie dust. Muscle man Dwayne Johnson stars as Derek, an aging minor league hockey player nicknamed the Tooth Fairy because when he checks opponents into the glass, they literary lose a tooth into the stands.
A self-centered cynic, Derek tells his fans not to set their goals too high, because they’ll never achieve to his level so they’ll be disappointed. When his girlfriend’s 6-year-old daughter loses her front tooth, he tells her that there’s no such thing as the Tooth Fairy. And to add insult to injury, Derek uses the kid’s Tooth Fairy money to cover a poker bet.
Of course these infractions will not stand in Fairy Land. So suddenly Derek sprouts fairy wings and is whisked away before the head fairy (Julie Andrews) who sentences him to two weeks of Tooth Fairy duty for almost spoiling the child’s faith.
Did I mention this was a kid’s fable? Good!
In Fairy Land, Derek meets Jerry (Billy Crystal), Fairy Land’s equipment manager who arms Derek with invisibility spray, fairy dust that make people forget they saw him, and a mini-bullhorn that chases away nosey felines. Derek is also assigned to a quirky 6-foot-7-inch fairy social worker named Tracy (Stephen Merchant), who envies Derek because he wishes he had been issued fairy wings too.
Admittedly “The Tooth Fairy” is a predictable believe-in-your-dreams kid’s movie, however, Johnson has likeable enough persona, even in a pink a tutu, to make the story work. Kids of all ages will enjoy it. |
