News Spotlight: Michiganders Work to Conquer Obesity Nominations Now Open for Governor’s Council Award

LANSING, MI — As millions of Americans spend the holiday season over indulging, the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports would like to recognize Michiganders who are standing up to obesity and inspiring others to do the same.

“It’s understandable that people struggle with weight issues during the holidays.  At my doctor’s urging, I’ve been working to lose 10 pounds and I was making good progress until Thanksgiving, when that progress slowed,” said Governor Rick Snyder.  “Fortunately, there are many Michigan residents who are committed to helping by educating members of their community about healthy diets and exercise.  The Governor’s Council Conquering Obesity award will recognize individuals and programs that are working to triumph over obesity with a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.”

With more than 30 percent of its citizens categorized as obese, Michigan has the one of the highest rates of obesity in the United States. Carrying extra weight isn’t the only problem for individuals. Obesity can contribute to heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other health issues.  The Governor’s Council will honor both individuals and programs that have taken steps to battle the bulge at home and in Michigan communities.

“In this season of giving, it’s important to recognize organizations and individuals who are giving the gift of a healthier life to their neighbors,” said Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council. “This gift cannot be boxed or wrapped, but it is possibly the most important gift one can give. The Governor’s Council aims to honor those making a positive change for our citizens. Together we can create a healthier population.”

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports and the Michigan Fitness Foundation envision a physically educated population with the knowledge and skills to enjoy a healthy, vigorous and safe lifestyle in communities designed to support physical activity.  For more information, visit www.michiganfitness.org.
