While it may be most famously known for its romantic scenery and cultural traditions, few cities in the world showcase the range of architecture found in Seville, Spain. Two famous sights are The Alcazar, a Moorish mansion and royal residence, and the city’s cathedral, which is also the world’s largest Gothic building. However, it’s a modern structure that is creating chatter around the Spanish city: the Metropol Parasol.
Opened in March 2011, the Metropol Parasol is a multi-use structure providing a new, modern focal point in a previously neglected square. The building’s most obvious use is as a convenient shady spot in the sun-drenched city, but it also hosts an architectural museum in its basement and a restaurant up above. One of the most exciting features of the new structure is the walkway that serves as a viewing platform of Seville, similar to Barcelona’s La Pedrera. A member of VirtualTourist.com was quick to point out that while the structure is amazing, the local nickname for it is “Las Setas de la Encarnacion” — Encarnacion’s Mushrooms — so it remains to be seen if the people of Seville really enjoy their new view.
