What’s better than reading a good book on a summer day? How about reading it in one of Michigan’s gorgeous state parks?

The Capital Area District Library is helping make that scenario a reality for local residents by participating in Park & Read, a program sponsored by the Library of Michigan and Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

From now until Oct. 1, CADL card holders can visit any of our 13 branches to check out a free one-day park pass. The pass, valid for seven days from checkout, allows you to waive the $10 Recreation Passport entry fee at any Michigan State Park or State campground. That’s over a hundred different locations! Some of the parks even loan out comfy hammocks for your book-reading (or napping) pleasure.

If you prefer a little more action on your vacation, the passes also provide one-time access to the more than 500 events scheduled to take place in state parks and recreation areas this summer. Kayaking, geocaching, archery-pick your park and get going!
Not really an outdoor person? We’ve still got you covered. The Park & Read pass is also good for entry at any of the 12 museums or historic sites within the Michigan Historical Museum system. These include not only Lansing’s own amazing Michigan Historical Museum (good for up to four people), but sites as diverse as the Tawas Point Lighthouse and the Hartwick Pines Logging Museum.
From Algonac to Yankee Springs, your summer of fun in Michigan is a sure thing. Find much more information about Michigan State Parks and the Park & Read program by visiting michigan.gov/dnr and clicking on “Camping and Recreation” in the left-side menu.

To be sure a pass is available at your CADL branch, call ahead before you visit-these are popular items! Also popular are the great travel books in our collection that can make your summer even sweeter. Find these recommended titles-and many more-at cadl.org/catalog.
