LANSING, MI — The Lansing Police Department is currently seeking volunteers for the Victim Advocate Program. Volunteers are utilized at the request of the Lansing Police Officers and Firefighters for many situations.
Victim Advocates comfort and help victims by making appropriate referrals to community agencies and services available to them. They serve as a go between for victims, families, law enforcement and emergency service providers. Advocates accompany victims to the hospital, police station, or court as needed and aid and educate victims as to their rights, Crime Victim Compensation and the criminal justice system. Advocates free up police, fire and emergency medical personnel to do their jobs without leaving the victim or victim’s family unattended.
This is highly motivated, caring and compassionate group of volunteers who have received training by the Lansing Police Department personnel. Their training includes various aspects of law enforcement procedures, the judicial system, stages of grief and loss, appropriate communication techniques and victim rights.
