Melvin S. Williams,
Attorney and Community Supporter

     Mr. Melvin Mc Williams is an attorney who operates the Law Offices of Melvin S. McWilliams, P.C.  He has just completed his 30th year in the practice of law. He represents clients in a variety of practice areas with an emphasis on general business, non-profit corporations, labor and employment, real estate, the representation of public bodies, including charter schools, estate planning, and personal injury matters.
      Mr. Mc Williams was for several years a shareholder with Howard & Howard Attorneys, P.C. Prior to 1996,   Mr. Mc Williams served as Chief Assistant City Attorney for the City of Lansing where he was actively involved in the management of City of Lansing’s legal affairs.  He has also held the positions of Supervising Attorney with the UAW-GM Legal Services Plan and of Assistant City Attorney with the City of Jackson (Michigan). Mr. Mc Williams received a B.A. degree from Kalamazoo College in 1972 and a J.D. degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1976. 
      He is admitted to all state courts of Michigan, the United States Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. 
     Mr. Mc Williams is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the National Bar Association, the American Bar Association; the Ingham County Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, and a member of the Lansing Black Lawyers Association. Professionally, Mr. Mc Williams has served as the attorney for Shabazz Public School Academy since 1997, and provides legal assistance to several charter schools across the State of Michigan. Mr. Mc Williams is currently serving his second term as Basileus of the Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Inc., and currently serves on the City of Lansing Park Advisory Board.
       Over the years, Mr. Mc Williams has been involved in a number of community efforts. These include helping organize legally several non-profit organizations, including Black Men Incorporated of Greater Lansing and its Charitable & Education Fund, the Lansing Area Commission on Race & Diversity, Inc., and the Richard D. Letts Memorial Scholarship Golf Committee, Inc., securing for each 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. Mr. Mc Williams also helped organize the Kimberly Jones Make It Happen Foundation as a non-profit tax exempt organization, as well as other organization here and in Southeast Michigan.
       Mr. Mc Williams’ community involvement also includes serving as a volunteer on the Prostate Cancer Awareness Committee for several years, several years of service on the Board of Highfields, Inc., prior service both as President and as a Director of Black Men Incorporated of Greater Lansing, and prior service as PTA President at Averill School.
     Mr. Mc Williams currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Lansing Rotary Club, and is a member of Trinity AME Church and its Sons of Allen organization. He is married to Sharon McWilliams and they have two adult children.
