Government Relations and Community Leadership Executive
Calvin L. Jones was born December 23, 1953, in Lansing, Michigan to Dupree and Rachel Jones. Brothers and sisters include Gregory, Claudette, Brian, Rosie, Eric, Edwin, Debra and Aaron Jones.
Jones graduated from Eastern High School in 1972. His education was enhanced with many activities, including sports, student council and reporting school announcements during the morning and evening. Jones continued his education at Lansing Community College where he earned his Associates Degree in 1988. Pursuing his dream of a political career, Jones graduated from the Community Leadership Development Academy at Lansing Community College in 1990, the Michigan Political Leadership Program at Michigan State University in 1996, the Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership and Management at Michigan State University in 1999 and Leadership Michigan, Michigan Chamber of Commerce in 2005.
Jones began his professional career at Speaker, Hines and Thomas, a lithography firm in Lansing in 1973. After working as a graphic arts apprentice for three years, he joined the United States Marine Corp working in Administration/Communication until 1976. He then became politically active in managing and advising people on campaigns as they were running for political offices. Jones is currently a highly respected business leader for the Lansing Board of Water and Light where he has been employed for more than 29 years.
Jones is well known in the Mid-Michigan area as a strong community leader. Currently, he serves as President of the Waverly Board of Education overseeing a budget of $31.5 million, 436 employees, and 3,233 students.
He received the Community Lugnut Service Award and recently was honored as “Unsung Heroes” with the 2005 Lansing State Journal.
He serves as President and Founder of the Kim Jones Make It Happen Foundation. 2005 scholarship awards were presented to Brittany Harris and Scott Venman. Each received a $1000 award for excellence in volunteerism.
