I’ve been seeing a lot of cases of “hand, foot and mouth disease” (HFM) in the office lately. This illness is usually caused by a Coxsackie virus A-16, a member of the enteroviral family. These viruses are typically seen in the summer and early fall. (Don’t worry, this illness is not related to “hoof and mouth” disease seen in animals.)

Q. I have a good friend at work who lately seems to be on a path of self-destruction. She is showing up late at work, not submitting her work on schedule, and generally is putting her job at risk. I’ve been trying to cover for her, but that is starting to put my job at risk. I can’t afford to lose my job, but I feel bad for my friend. How can I deal with this?

A few years ago while driving through Big Sur, California, I stumbled across a state park that boasted a beautiful waterfall called McWay Falls. Stopping along the side of the road to admire the falls dumping into the Pacific Ocean, I noticed a tiny wedding ceremony in progress. I remember thinking: Wow-rigging your wedding to take place near a natural scenic treasure is incredibly romantic!
