Dear Readers,
Summer is a very interesting time of year in Michigan. One day it will be 50 degrees the next day it is 85 degrees and 101 in your car. Summer brings out a lot in people as well. No pun intended but we must revisit proper etiquette. I know that it may be hard to hear about this but it is necessary to talk about. And of course, I am not talking about you.

Q: My husband and I recently flew from Berlin to Newark on Continental Airlines. After about 45 minutes in the air, the flight attendants offered beverage service. I politely requested coffee.

My husband and I have been married for four years. In those four years I have had two children and have gained quite a bit of weight. On our wedding day I was about a size 6 and now I am closer to a size 16. At first my husband didn’t complain about my weight gain, but lately he is starting to be more verbal about his disapproval.

While walking down the hallway in my office, I kept hearing patients expressing concern about a “spider bite.” But how many spiders could there be out there, I wondered, especially in early spring? Also, these “spider bites” seemed to occur in weird places – a baby’s bottom, the inner thigh, the palm of the hand. In most cases, a patient never saw the offending spider.

The number of private sector workers who have traditional pensions is shrinking – and those who do have pensions are worried. Headlines about underfunded public sector plans have fueled the concerns, along with general worry about the economy and the health of employers.
Children who don’t read over the course of two or three summers will fall behind their peers by a year in reading development.
The countdown to the last day of school has begun! While parents and children alike may be looking forward to more free time and a break from homework, one activity they shouldn’t take a vacation from is reading.

Lansing will pulsate with the rhythmic beat of spoken word as the Poetry in the City kicks off. Poetry in the City is an annual event that showcases a number of locally and nationally recognized poets. A NuPoet Collective and The New Citizens Press’ brainchild, the series is being organized in conjunction with the Lansing Jaycees.
