COPING WITH GRIEF AND LOSS

At some point in their lives, everyone experiences grief of one kind or another. Grief is a response to the loss of something or someone, and even when it’s expected, it can knock us off our feet. Recently, there have been some violent events-shootings, vehicle accidents, stabbings-that have led to grief and loss for us as a community. Ongoing sources for grief include job loss, divorce and home foreclosure.

It’s easy to pick out the true tomato lovers among us at this time of year. In spite of the late-summer heat, they look bright and happy. They know that it’s the moment sun-ripened tomatoes grown in the garden or on the farm are reaching their peak.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports that the unemployment rate for teens this summer is expected to be 26.4 percent — the highest number since they began tracking in 1948. Double that number and you begin to come close to the unemployment rate for black and Hispanic teens. Summer jobs that many of us were accustomed to growing up are virtually non-existent. Research shows a direct correlation to criminal activity and lack of meaningful work experience among teens.
