From Volunteer Service to Art Exhibitions, Yvette Robinson Continues to Inspire

EAST LANSING, MI – Following a career celebration in August of 2024, marking two decades of volunteer service to the City of East Lansing as the curator of the East Lansing Public Art Gallery, Yvette Robinson wasted no time thrusting herself into welcoming artistic opportunities that were previously time-challenging due to her dedication to municipal volunteer work. Her volunteer work with the city reached a milestone, but Robinson’s commitment to community engagement continues as she redirects her energy into new projects.

Yvette Robinson participated in the 2024 Cohort of the SOLHOT 60+ Artists Residency Program, where her contributions exemplified the program’s mission. As an artist and SOLHOT 60+ community Sister, Yvette’s ability to support and uplift the well-being of the cohort showcased her exceptional gift of fostering connection and encouragement. Her involvement defined the essence of the initiative, emphasizing the importance of community and creativity in the lives of its participants.

The SOLHOT 60+ Artists Residency Program is a collaborative initiative involving Michigan State University’s Department of African American & African Studies (AAAS), the Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) Museum + Art School, and community engagement practices. Rooted in the 20+ year research and creative practice of Dr. Ruth Nicole Brown, Chair of MSU’s AAAS, SOLHOT (Saving Our Lives Hear Our Truths) celebrates Black Girlhood and, through SOLHOT 60+, centers Black women aged 60 and beyond. In partnership with Dr. Gwendolyn M. Taylor, visionary and co-collaborator of SOLHOT 60+, this initiative focuses on honoring and elevating the creativity and well-being of Black women.

Robinson said, “I was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be one of 10 appointed women of color to participate in an art residency at the Flint Institute of Arts – School of Arts. It was surreal to stand in front of a huge crowd of attendees to give a brief speech. I am truly aware of how one door opens another. I am more aware of how and why artists need one another for support, love, encouragement, growth, and empowerment. I was inspired by each of them. It takes us to make us.“

The SOLHOT 60+ Art Exhibition Opening Reception took place on Friday, October 18, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Flint Institute of Arts, located at 1120 E. Kearsley St., Flint, MI 48503.

More Opportunities

Robinson’s work has earned her one of only five coveted spots in the prestigious Michigan Institute of Contemporary Art (MICA) lobby exhibition at 311 N. Capitol. Her pieces are displayed alongside a select few other distinguished artists. Recognizing her artistic vision, MICA has already secured her participation in an exclusive group exhibition planned for 2025.

Christmas and Beyond

As the holiday season rolls around, Robinson’s creative spirit is brought out as she immerses herself in crafting and designing festive pieces. From handcrafted ornaments to unique holiday décor, each item reflects her attention to detail and artistic vision. Presently, Robinson is working diligently to finish art and craft pieces that she will present and sell at her booth during Meridian Township’s 5th Annual Holiday Crafts and Vendor Show on December 21st and 22nd.

Between all of this, Ms. Robinson is preparing for the juried art competition at the February 2025 Greater Lansing Orchid Society Show & Sale, one of Michigan’s premier orchid events. The annual show transforms the Michigan State University Plant and Soil Sciences Building into a spectacular display of exotic orchids featuring award-winning specimens throughout the Midwest. Visitors can explore educational exhibits, attend expert presentations, and purchase rare orchids from specialized vendors.

Supporting small businesses and local artisans remains vital to Robinson’s mission. As a commissioned artist, she collaborates closely with clients, carefully listening to their vision as they describe project pieces for themselves or loved ones. Her versatile artistic skills span multiple mediums, including acrylics, plaster, wood, fun art, resin, wedding accessories, jewelry, handicrafts, mixed-media, fabrics, and photography.

“I have more time to do something for me.  I am smiling as I am working. I am looking forward to what will come in 2025,” exclaimed Robinson.
