FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LANSING, MI — The New Citizens Press Community Action Network (TNCPCAN) has announced that the 2026 Poetry in the City event, originally scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 2026 has been cancelled due to construction work currently taking place on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol.
The decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of poets, performers, volunteers, and attendees while construction is underway.
Since its founding in 2005, Poetry in the City has brought together poets, spoken-word artists, musicians, and community members for an evening celebrating creativity, literacy, and artistic expression in the heart of Lansing. The annual event has become a longstanding tradition, welcoming both featured performers and community members to share original work in a family-friendly atmosphere.
“We are disappointed that we won’t be gathering this year, but the safety of our community comes first,” said Rina Risper, coordinator of Poetry in the City and Executive Director of The New Citizens Press Community Action Network. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to returning next summer.”
Organizers are pleased to announce that Poetry in the City will return on the third Thursday in July 2027, July 17, continuing its tradition of celebrating the power of poetry and community.
TNCPCAN extends its sincere appreciation to the poets, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who have helped make Poetry in the City a cherished Lansing tradition for more than two decades.
