Dr. Maxine Hankins Cain, affectionately known as Nana Cain, recently celebrated her 80th birthday. She enjoyed support from love, family, and encouragement. She continues her recovery after a stroke.
Her husband, Dr. Eugene Cain, has shared an uplifting progress update. He also posted a birthday video tribute titled Being Maxine, celebrating her life, laughter, and compassion.
Dr. Cain reports Maxine was recently transferred from University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital. Subsequently, she moved to the Ingham County Rehabilitation Services center in Okemos, Michigan. There, she continues receiving intensive therapy focused on improving her mobility.
There is encouraging news. Dr. Cain reports that the slurring of her speech has almost completely disappeared. She is adjusting well to her new surroundings, enjoys her therapists and support staff, and appreciates the beautiful outdoor view from her room.
“She remains determined, more than ever, to meet all the challenges facing her,” Dr. Cain shared, adding that she continues to face those challenges with her perpetual smile.
Her 80th birthday weekend was made especially meaningful by a visit from all of her sons, lifting her spirits tremendously.
During their visit, Dr. Cain shared a draft of Being Maxine, a film he created to honor his wife’s extraordinary life. Delighted by the tribute, she encouraged him to finish it and share it with everyone.
The film highlights the qualities that have endeared Nana Cain to so many: her warm embraces, uplifting words, contagious laughter, and dedication to supporting marginalized individuals and communities.
Dr. Cain also conveyed his wife’s heartfelt appreciation for the many prayers, cards, and kind messages she has received throughout her recovery.
The New Citizens Press joins family, friends, and the community in wishing Nana Cain a happy 80th birthday and a continued, speedy recovery.
Her journey is a reminder of the power of family, faith, perseverance, and community support. The compassion she has extended to others throughout her life is now being returned to her in abundance.
Happy 80th Birthday, Nana Cain! We are cheering for you and wishing you continued healing, strength, and many more beautiful moments with those you love.
