Dear Readers,
Someone who was always trying to get me to conform to his views, regardless of how sensible, would always begin his statement with, “The reality is….” There was always a reality but it was never normal.
Maybe people don’t want normal anymore. Perhaps we sit in front of the television hour after hour
watching “reality shows” so that we can be amazed by places, names or events that are close to home.
One of my favorite shows on the Food Network is “Man vs. Food”. It is a reality show featuring Adam Richman who travels throughout the United States exploring menus and eating large proportions
of food. I always get excited when I see Michigan businesses featured on any national show,
so imagine how excited I was to see Mallie’s Sports Grill & Bar, which is located at 19400 Northline Road in Southgate, Michigan. They were featured on the show as they created a mammoth of a
hamburger.
According the Guinness Book of World Records, Mallie’s Sports Grill & Bar’s ”Absolutely Ridiculous
Burger” is approximately 185.6 pounds, 3 feet tall and 26 inches round. Imagine a 3 man team, 200 pounds of uncooked ground beef 15 lbs of vegetables, 10 lbs. of cheese and 4 lbs. of bacon
nestled in between a homemade bun baked to perfection.
“The reality is..” it is different when reality helps businesses. Steve Mallie, the owner of Mallie’s, is experiencing fame in the form of “financial gain”. In a telephone conversation with him he said
that business increased about 10% to 15%. During an economic downturn, “the reality is” any publicity for those in our state is good for business. The $500.00 hamburger, of all hamburgers, has been
recently sold for a birthday party, tailgaiting party and some folks at Ford Motor company purchased one as well. With the certificate in hand from Guinness Book of World Records and the visit
from “Man vs. Food”, new fans have been flocking to Mallie’s and they are in for a ”big” surprises.
Some of the other “big hits” is a 20” inch cookie covered in chocolate chips. Their Ginormous Cookie is yet another signature specialty at Mallie’s. If you can’t handle the “Absolutely Ridiculous Burger”, the 6
lb. monster burger may be up your alley.
They do also serve, steaks, seafood, pizzas, pasta and sandwiches. With 33 televisions, 3 10 ft projection screens, a game and billiards room and friendly staff it is worth the visit.
I mean I can see how exciting it is to see people competing everyday and then begging people to call their 1- 800 number. Who hasn’t dreamed about becoming a famous somebody.
In many minds, Mallie’s deserve their national fame because they also take care of the community with their ”Make-A-Wish” Mondays, serving free hamburgers (some restrictions apply) and raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The also have clowns, balloons and face painting on Monday nights making it appealing to families. They support a variety of local artists and the music scene weekly ranges from Frank Sinatra Tuesdays to the Hottest Party in Town on Saturdays.
Mallie’s website even introduced me to the International Federation of Competitive Eating (www.ifoce.com). Who would have ever thought eating would become a sport?
Paris Hilton and the Real Housewives of Atlanta, move over, because Ginormous Cookie and the Absolutely Ridiculous Hamburger are gaining fame. The reality is…did I hear someone say road trip?
