[Mo:] Buenos Dias!
[Jo:] Ahhhh…Mo is practicing her Spanish in preparation for our upcoming travels south of the border. So for this review, we decided to feast on authentic Mexican food. A friend suggested the Cancun Mexican Grill so we jumped in the car and headed to Okemos.
[Mo:] When we walked in, we noticed the décor. It was brightly colored, almost tropical and immediately transformed my mood from “hectic lifestyle” to “festive getaway”. Can I also say that the place was spotless from front to back!
[Jo:] We were immediately greeted and seated by our server. He introduced himself, (his name was Hector) and he treated us like an old friend. We felt instantly at home. Once seated, we were given huge menus!
[Mo:] I felt a little overwhelmed because of the many choices. For our vegetarian readers, you will be pleased because of the many meatless options. I didn’t even know where to start! Thankfully, Hector was there to help.
[Jo:] He knew the menu like the back of his hand and made fabulous suggestions for us. Mo had the “Cancun Chicken” and I had the “Cheesesteak Burrito.”
[Mo:] Before we talk about our entrées, we must talk about the chips and salsa!
[Jo:] Yes! Now, any restaurant worth its weight starts off with chips and salsa. When ours arrived, we could tell that they were going to be good. The chips were fresh. How do I know? They were still warm, lightly salted and melted in my mouth. I couldn’t stop eating them.
[Mo:] They were so good – even plain but once I tasted the salsa, I was hooked. The salsa was not filled with chunks but was smooth and rich with tomatoes. In fact, I could taste the freshness of the tomatoes and it served the right amount of heat.
[Jo:] Now for the meals. The Cheesesteak Burrito was amazing. Think of a standard Philly Cheesesteak (i.e., strips of steak, lots of cheese) but kicked up a notch. The steak was very well seasoned, and wrapped with sautéed onions and peppers in a flour tortilla. Then it was topped with cheese. Yummmm!
[Mo:] The “Cancun Chicken” had tender, richly marinated strips of chicken which was served with sautéed onions, peppers and covered with cheese. It was served with refried beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. To top it off, the dish included flour and corn tortillas on the side. Needless to say, I was quiet for the next half-hour.
[Jo:] I was too! I think we stopped on occasion to look up at each other, smile, and nod.
[Mo:] I was a very happy patron at the end of our meal, plotting for our next visit. If you want an excellent meal, in a friendly atmosphere with great food, you MUST visit the Cancun Mexican Grill; don’t you think?
[Jo:] Si!!!
