LANSING, MI — Mighty Medicine, soul rock duo, is helping to organize a benefit concert Saturday, January 8th from 4pm-10pm at Everybody Reads Bookstore located at 2019 East Michigan Avenue in Lansing, MI. The proceeds from this concert will support the Bucoseh Orphanage and school in Haiti. Mighty Medicine is guitarist and folk instrumentalist, Larry Neuhardt and vocalist and percussionist, DeShaun Sparkle Snead.
The duo believes that music helps build wide networks and a strong communities, so they were eager to be involved in the organizing of an event to benefit young earthquake survivors. Scott Harris, owner of Everybody Reads was also happy to host the event.
Bucoseh USA is a non-profit organization based in Lansing, dedicated to supporting the orphanage/school near Port-au-Prince. Clebert Balthazar, a Haitian, founded the orphanage, when children sought refuge in his home immediately after the January 2010 earthquake. The twenty-five children who live and go to school at the orphanage are in need of books, benches, and a shelter from the rain. Bucoseh USA has been sending money to help supply the school with materials and support staff since September of 2010. It costs about $1,000 every month to keep the facility operating and meeting the needs of the children.
Commemorating the first anniversary of the January 2010 earthquake, this concert, in harmony with a global community cause, will help raise funds for the orphanage.
Mighty Medicine will be performing that evening along with singer songwriter Barb Barton, guitarist and singer Elden Kelly, hip hop artist Philthy, The Ingham County Ramblers a blues band, and singer songwriter Medicine Crow. All of these bands and artists will be donating their time and music to the effort.
Mighty Medicine contacted these musicians and artists, who responded with positive energy and willingness to help. Since the summer of 2009 Mighty Medicine has gained popularity and the reputation for being one of the busiest bands in Lansing. They have performed over 300 concerts, played live on multiple radio, television, and Internet programs; they are also featured on movie soundtracks, and commercials. Mighty Medicine plays many different venues but they committed to using their music as a source of healing and inspiration. “We really brighten the spirits of the people we play for, we really are Mighty Medicine,” said Neuhardt.
Michigan and Chicago audiences greet Mighty Medicine with enthusiasm. Larry and DeShaun are working to bring their music to world audiences. They released Bloom, their first independent LP, in 2009 with success. They are diligently at work on their second album, Mighty Medicine and plan to release it in March of 2011. One of the tracks they wrote is “Michigan Rock n Roll”, a song about Michigan’s past, present and future. Michigan audiences have greeted the song with enthusiasm.

Mighty Medicine and the Bucoseh USA Committee hope that the Saturday, January 8th benefit concert will help provide the resources that the Haitian orphans need. Donations will be accepted on a sliding scale, starting at $10-$50 or more. There will be a silent auction and Haitian food will be available for purchase.
