Jo:] The Magnolia Café is one of those places that we heard about prior to our move to Austin. In fact, you may have heard of the place from The Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.
[Mo:] So one Sunday afternoon, we ventured in and were seated right away. The décor inside was very colorful with an art-deco theme. We were greeted immediately by our server and with pictures of Billy Holiday, Adam Ant, Buddy Holly and Jimi Hendrix all over the wall and all made from glitter.
[Jo:] Yes, there’s no better way to brighten up your day than with a wall full of glitter art. You too can own your own piece of glitter art because they were for sale, starting at $650 per piece! Although the Magnolia Café serves all types of food ranging from soups and salads to sandwiches and quesadillas, we wanted breakfast, which was served 24 hours a day.
[Mo:] I had the Magnolia omelet which was served with avocado, tomatoes, black olives, cheddar and jack cheese and topped with a lemon sour cream sauce. It was amazing! I never thought about combining avocado and eggs but it was rich with flavor together. This was the first time I had an omelet made by others where I didn’t have to add any seasoning.
[Jo:] I had the Love Migas which were eggs scrambled with “Love” butter. The love butter was a blend of butter with fresh garlic and Serrano pepper. The eggs were scrambled with tomatoes, onions, bell peppers and topped with jack cheese and served with tortillas and black beans on the side. It was excellent!
[Mo:] Let’s not forget the “piece de resistance” – the side of gingerbread pancakes!
[Jo:] Yes, folks. Imagine the pancake equivalent of a decadent gingerbread cookie but mine was served loaded with pecans and Mo ordered hers filled with bananas. I don’t think we talked for the remainder of the meal.
[Mo:] We didn’t. Once those pancakes, served with real butter and pure maple syrup hit my stomach, I felt like singing.
[Jo:] Be careful, you may end up becoming glitter art! This place is crowded y’all so don’t venture there on the weekend, or evenings, or holidays…
[Mo:] Absolutely! This is why it took us so long to get here. Every time we tried, the place was packed! There would be a line of hungry patrons spilling out of the door, into the parking lot. By the way, did you just say “y’all?”
[Jo:] Huh? I think it’s time for our quote of the week! When asking a native why Texans talk so funny, the Texan replied, “We don’t talk funny! I’m fixin’ to put a hurtin’ on y’all!”
