MSU Community Music School Offers Five Summer Music Camps

EAST LANSING, MI — From jazz to rock to music therapy, the Michigan State University Community Music School (CMS) offers summer camps that appeal to a range of interests. Youth can select from five different camps. All are now open for registration.
 
The camps include Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp, Jazz Camp, Rock Camp, Middle School Band Camp, and Musical Theatre Camp.
 
“These camp opportunities provide participants with a wonderful opportunity to learn more in their specific area of music study,” said Jaime DeMott, camps coordinator and associate director of CMS. “Each of the camps is designed to provide students with a fun, rewarding, and educational experience.”
 
All camps are held at either the MSU Community Music School or the Michigan State University campus. Lodging and financial aid are available for some camps. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

MSU Community Music School Summer Camps

Eric ‘RicStar’ Winter Music Therapy Camp
June 16-18, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
$185 (1 camper), $350 (2 campers), $510 (3 campers)
The RicStar Camp is a day camp that provides opportunities for musical expression, enjoyment, and interaction for all persons with special needs and their siblings. Sessions include songwriting, rock ‘n’ roll combo, silly sing-along, xylophones, percussion, movement, improvisation, and more.

Jazz Camp
June 19-24, 8 a.m.-10 p.m.
$500 non-residential, $600 residential

This residential camp is for middle and high school students from both Southeast Michigan and Greater Lansing, with some playing experience on their instruments. The program focuses on jazz orchestra and small groups exposing participants to the many arrangements and composition styles used in jazz. Students learn applied theory, sight-reading, and improvisation. Students stay in residence halls, thereby getting a firsthand look at college life. Students work with MSU College of Music world-class faculty and MSU jazz studies student mentors.

Rock Camp
July 11-15, 1-5 p.m.
$220
Rock Camp is a day camp for middle and high school students who have some experience playing their instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, or vocals). Students will form and perform in their own bands. Students who play other instruments or have limited experience should consult the Community Music School. Camp will conclude with a performance at the Common Ground Music Festival <http://www.commongroundfest.com/> . Price includes the cost of admission to the festival for the child and one parent.

Middle School Band Camp
July 18-22, 9 a.m.-2:50 p.m.
$215
The Middle School Band Camp is a day camp for middle school students who have completed at least one year of instrumental study. This five-day camp meets in the Music Building on the MSU campus, and provides students with an opportunity to perform with other talented students, receive class instruction in instrumental technique, and explore music through musicianship classes. Time spent studying and rehearsing culminates in a concert for parents and friends on Friday, July 22, at Wharton Center for Performing Arts.

Musical Theatre Camp
July 25-29,
$195 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (grades 9-12)
$185 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (grades 2-8)
Musical Theatre Camp is a day camp for elementary, middle, and high school students interested in musical theatre. Campers in grades 2-12 will develop skills including solo and ensemble voice development, choreography, and prop design while focusing on healthy singing using musical theatre repertoire. The camp will culminate in a final revue featuring scenes and songs from many popular musicals.

Founded in 1993, the Community Music School (CMS) is the outreach division of the MSU College of Music. The mission of CMS is to provide comprehensive music education – quality instruction, related music services, and educational programs – for interested individuals of all ages and levels with financial assistance for those in need.
