HOLT, MI — While the economy is crawling at a slow pace and individuals have cut back on their spending, women have found a way to clean out the clutter in their closets and make some extra cash.
The Rivers of Life Church (ROL) Sister 2 Sister Sale evolved because church member, Linda Cornish, participates in the annual Michigan State University Women’s Resource Center’s Woman to Woman sale on campus organized by Evette Chavez Lockhart. Cornish invited Sabrina Todd, another ROL church member, to visit the sale on October 8, 2011. Todd was immediately impressed by the event.
Cornish and Todd conversed and decided the same concept would be a great opportunity for the ROL church sisters then began planning for the church to have an event held on Saturday, October 29, 2011.
Members of ROL thought the idea would serve as a way of making extra cash, cleaning out their closets and an opportunity to fellowship with one another and the community. Todd made a flier, Gloria Pearl Jones (aka Glorious), gospel music personality of JOY 1580 AM and 103 FM gospel station created a radio commercial. Cornish organizing the event by posting information repeatedly on social media and Coddie Black assisted with set-up and additional public relations.
Brigette Brown, who is the pastor of ROL, participated as a seller with 31 pairs of shoes and also displayed her high fashion Premier Designs Jewelry and Charron Basey provided BeautiControl in Home Spa & Pampering products. Other selling participants provided shoes, purses, jewelry, slightly used clothing and coats. The sisters (sellers and buyers) had an amazing time socializing and doing what most women do best…shopping.
Linda Cornish said, “We were a community sowing seed making it happen during this so called slow economy. The event was so successful that we are planning another event tentatively Saturday, December 3, 2011.”
The church is located at 2485 N. Cedar Street (next to the bookstore). For event information, contact Linda Cornish at cornishL@msu.edu.
