Local high school computer science program launches

EAST LANSING, MI —Students in the greater Lansing region now have the opportunity to participate in a new computer science program, Computer Science Academy, developed by the Capital Area Career Center/ Ingham ISD in partnership with Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) and the Capital Area IT Council.

The program is housed at MSUFCU headquarters in East Lansing. The academy teaches technical skills in areas such as computer programming and robotics, as well as employability skills. It will also provide numerous worksite experiences. The program is very rigorous. It is appropriate for students pursuing a four-year degree in computer science. The Capital Area IT Council will bring together local IT companies to offer job shadows and internships, serve as guest speakers, and provide exposure to the local IT industry and the hundreds of jobs available in the industry, something IT organizations in the region have been seeking.

“The program will help generate interest and awareness of technology-related careers,” says April Clobes, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at MSUFCU. “The Computer Science Academy is a partnership focused on getting students interested and equipped for future IT jobs by building relationships with employers and understanding what it really means to work in information technology.”

Students will be eligible to earn college credits and additional math credits for high school. This is a one-year program for high school juniors and seniors in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties.
