Movie Marks 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement

 Carib Press —  Starring Anika Noni Rose, Wood Harris and David Alan Grier, “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” is the tale of a summer journey that leaves a family – and a nation – forever transformed.

 
Set in the summer of 1963 in Flint, Michigan, the movie follows the Watsons, a close knit family made up of Daniel and Wilona Watson, (Harris and Rose) and their three kids who set off on road trip down south, but once there discover that life is very different there than in Flint – and not necessarily for the better. Their historic summer experiences give them a new found courage to stand up for what is right and helps them grow stronger as a family in the process.
 
The film is an adaptation of Christopher Paul Curtis’ Newberry Honor and Coretta Scott King Honor Award-winning book The Watsons Go To Birmingham – 1963.
 
Skai Jackson, LaTanya Richardson, Bryce Jenkins and Harrison Knight also star.
 
“Watsons” is faithfully adapted by acclaimed children’s book author and screenwriter Tonya Lewis Lee who also co-produces with Nikki Silver and is directed by Tony Award nominee Kenny Leon.
 
“The Watsons Go to Birmingham” premieres September 20, 2013 on the Hallmark Channel.
