Dear Readers,
There are some who say that libraries are a thing of the past and are no longer relevant. They really do not know what they are talking about! In my opinion, libraries offer so much more than they ever have to businesses, employees and the community. My mother learned how to navigate the internet in a class at her local library in Georgia.
There are several sources that can be accessed from my local library (www.cadl.org). I personally use their services on a weekly basis. I would suggest that you connect with your local library or state library and find out what programs they have to offer. At Lansing Community College, non-students cannot get a library card to check out books but they do have resources that you can use and read on location. Just ask a librarian.
One of my favorite resources to use is www.lynda.com. They have instructional videos recognized by industry experts. With your card, you can log on and have access to thousands of high-quality online videos to assist you with business, acquiring the latest information to update your technical skills or learn how to perfect your photography. You just have to log on and the best part is you can peruse at your own leisure.
My second favorite website is www.pronunciator.com. I wished this was available when I worked at the United Nations in New York City. I had to learn languages by asking my co-workers to teach me. Logging on gives you the opportunity to learn 80 languages (including English) in any of 50 languages. You can use it on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
If you are in business, there are developing countries that will begin to increase their economic growth and their standards of living will rise. If you are considering selling to an emerging market, understanding the language or knowing key phrases will be helpful.
Pronunciator is very interactive and includes flashcards, pronunciation analysis, conversation practice, quizzes, downloadable audio lessons and has kid-friendly lessons. You will need a library card to have access.
As a business owner, get creative and have a library card drive. You can also provide your employees with information regarding what is happening at the library. Many of the events are free. The programs can be used at home or work too.
For your employees that have toddlers, there are programs that can help their youngsters navigating the internet. Award winning www.ABCmouse.com is an early learning site that is free too. This summer, log on and engage your children in learning. They have a full online curriculum for ages 2-7. For your readers, there are plenty of summer reading programs for your child to be involved in as well. You will need a library card to have access.
I know I sound like a broken record but I love the library. There are so many opportunities that await you and your family. The library is equipped to handle both business and personal! And it is for free! Take advantage of all that they have to offer by getting a library card. Did I say it is free?
Love people,
Rina Risper
P.S. Remember to do what makes you happy more often.
