On Thursday, August 18, 2016, Lansing Police Chief Mike Yankowski placed Sergeant Charles Funk, an 18-year department employee, on administrative leave while a criminal investigation was being conducted by the Michigan State Police (MSP).
The criminal investigation is based on the allegation that Sergeant Funk committed a misdemeanor moving traffic violation while driving his patrol car on duty August 10, 2016. In accordance with Lansing Police Department policy and procedures, MSP was contacted to conduct an independent investigation with regard to this criminal allegation.
The Michigan State Police completed their investigation and forwarded their reports to the Ingham County Prosecutors Office for review. Today, the Ingham County Prosecutor announced they have issued a misdemeanor charge against Sergeant Funk for failure to yield to a handicapped pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Also in accordance with the Lansing Police Department policy and procedure the Internal Affairs Unit will be investigating this matter internally. This internal investigation will determine if Sergeant Funk acted outside the policies and procedures of the Lansing Police Department.
“All allegations and complaints against department employees are taken seriously and are thoroughly investigated. The allegation against Sergeant Funk is disappointing and if the allegation is found to be true, he will be held accountable within the departments discipline process.” stated Chief Yankowski. UPDATE: Sergeant Funk turned himself in today on the arrest warrant and was arraigned in 54-A District court in front of Judge Millmore on the following charges:
