In parts one and two of this series, we focused on two of the common mistakes most people make when setting their goals. This third part of course, will cover the third mistake most people make.
The third common mistake most people make when setting their goals, is they are simply Not Specific or they are just too vague when detailing their goals. You may have fallen prey to this error during sometime in your past. Have you ever thought of owning a home and said to yourself: ‘One day, I’m going to be a homeowner.’ That statement in itself inspired you to really think about all that being a homeowner would entail for you. The more real that vision becomes, the more specific and detailed you find yourself when talking about it. Soon, the vague statement of, I’m going to own a home,’ becomes: “I’m going to own a four bedroom, two bathroom home that can accommodate overnight guests comfortably and is within walking distance from the beach.” Now that’s a goal you can see yourself sinking your teeth into! It is no longer just a vague, someday wish, but a detailed rendering of what you’re planning on achieving and because it is so detailed, you are even more impassioned to begin working to bring it to fruition. Goals that are vague, lacking luster, and with no specifics are hard for you, or anyone else to rally behind or become excited about. Also if your heart isn’t in it, your mind won’t invent it—and you’re simply left with a ‘goal-less goal,’ of just wondering what it would be like if you were to ever really complete it.
Another good reason for being more specific about your goals is that it allows you to begin to truly experience what it would feel like once you have reached that pinnacle of success. You begin to beam when telling others of your dream and they too, become excited for you as a result of the way you are able to express yourself more confidently in relation to what you’re embarking upon to complete. It is easy for others to get caught up in your excitement, because they’re able to feel the positive flow of energy you’re emitting when you’re relaying information that you are so connected with.
The mantra to remember the ‘Not Specific’ rule is: Specific thoughts yield quicker results!
