Poetry in the City on July 26, 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion visits Lansing

    LANSING, MI — A poetry reading will be held at the Women’s Historical Museum & Hall of Fame located at 213 West Main Street in Lansing on Thursday, August 9, 200 7 from 7-9 p.m. featuring the Old Town poets.  Another  will be held at Shabazz Academy in September.
    The Poetry in the City series is being organized in conjunction with the NorthWest Initiative.  
    Ed Mabrey hails from Columbus OH and he kept the audience mesmerized with his verbal skills.  The phenomal master wordsmith brought smiles to the attendees faces as he added at bit of Lansing to his poetry while performing on the Capitol steps. 
    Lisa Bond Brewer and her daughter Kai Brewer performed together.  As the words from Lisa’s poetry flowed, Kai danced in perfect unison.
    Poet Hajji, did a poem only using words beginning with the letter “c”.  It was a true test of creative genius.
     Deena Taylor treated the crowd to traditional rhymes as she made light of our relationship with grass. 
     There were over 100 people in attendance even though skies threatened rain people still trickled in.
     The Poetry in the City Series is being sponsored by  Target , the 2007 major sponsor; The Lansing Jaycees and The New Citizens Press Newspaper. Rina Risper, the NuPoet Collective Coordinator stated “The series is a very important project to us- our way of uplifting this beloved community through our artistic passion.
