Nicolas Valadez Sanchez
Fine Artist
Nicolas Valadez Sanchez is currently attending Kendall College of Art and Design on full scholarship pursuing Fine Art with a focus in Painting. He is in his third year and his plans after receiving his bachelor’s degree, will be to continue his studies to receive his certification in Art Education.
The style of his work is realistic and has aesthetic qualities reminiscent of Renaissance painters such as Carravaggio. Nicolas uses the figure to convey his message and often places them in dramatically light atmospheres. “Lighting is vital to the composition and overall feel of my work,” said Nicolas.
Nicolas has been drawing and painting his entire life and creates from life’s experiences. Now at age 24, his work is inspired by his bi-cultural experience as a Mexican American. His work embodies a struggling spirit that is constantly trying to balance Mexican traditions and beliefs with modern society in the U.S. How does one harmoniously satisfy the requirements for each culture? This is one of many ideas Nicolas explores in his artwork.
Recent achievements for Nicolas include a piece chosen by Lansing Community College to commemorate their 50th Year Anniversary in 2007. The painting can be seen in LCC’s library. He also has a mural honoring the efforts made by Cesar Chavez on display at LCC. “It was a great honor to create something that can constantly remind others of hard work, leadership and civil rights,” said Nicolas. He has been commissioned for countless work including portraits and murals both commercial and residential.
Nicolas now resides in Lansing, MI where he currently takes commissions from the Lansing area as well as the Grand Rapids area. Nicolas also currently works in Lansing as a Hip Hop dance instructor for many dance studios in the Lansing area including Ann’s Studio of Dance in East Lansing, and Danceworks in Holt.
