The Pout Pout Fish is a delightful children’s book written by Deb Diesen. The story of The Pout Pout Fish takes us on a magical underwater journey to discover that none of the other sea animals want to be in the presence of a pouting miserable fish. The book will amaze and inspire young readers to learn words that they can grow into like “kaleidoscope”.
It’s easy to see why this book is a New York Times Best Seller. Dan Hanna’s beautiful illustrations inspired by Deisen’s entertaining story line, make this book a must read for all ages. The Pout Pout Fish marks the debut of both author and illustrator and carries a rhythm and alliteration which brings the story to life. It reminds us that no matter how depressing life is something absolutely wonderful can happen to turn it all around. A perfect book for a child or an adult who can’t help “spreading dreary wearies all over the place”. The ending is not surprising but the vivid illustrations give each character voice and texture. Ms. Deisen has created a book that will be passed down in families and is definitely a household favorite.
Deisen is currently working on two more books, though neither of them will be out until 2010. The Barefooted, Bad-Tempered Baby Brigade (Tricycle Press), illustrated by Tracy Dockray, will be out March 2010. The Big-Big Dark, a sequel to The Pout-Pout Fish, will be illustrated by Dan Hanna and published by the fall 2010.
