EAST LANSING, MI — On Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at approximately 1:30 a.m., the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) was dispatched to an assault that had occurred outside a restaurant in the 300 block of E. Grand River Avenue.
The victim of the assault was identified as Caleb Alan Shermoe, a 20-year-old male from Fowlerville. Mr. Shermoe was transported to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Hospital by the East Lansing Fire Department where he received medical treatment for injuries sustained in the assault. Unfortunately, Mr. Shermoe passed away from his injuries several days later.
ELPD conducted a thorough investigation into this incident and was able to identify and locate the alleged suspect responsible for the assault upon Mr. Shermoe. ELPD submitted a warrant request to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office seeking criminal charges for this individual.
The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office has charged David Gaines Jr., a 24-year-old male from Lansing, with one count of manslaughter. Mr. Gaines was arraigned on March 20, 2025.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 28 at 8:30 a.m. and a preliminary examination on April 3 at 9 a.m. before Judge Molly Hennessey Greenwalt. Bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety.
An individual charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
