I love music and I am trying to get as many people to sing or play as possible. Even if you sing in the shower there is hope.
You may not think that you are good at it but there are all types of opportunities for you to try.
One of my favorite places to enjoy music is Michigan State University (MSU). They have such great programs and you do not even have to be a student to sing. You just have to have a gift of voice, which many of us have but we choose not to exercise.
The opportunity to learn different styles of music is really important as well. I love listening to classical music. It never changes. There is no real challenge with the exception of listening to the pitch and singing the right notes.
For those who are really brave the MSU Choral Union is holding auditions. Who gets to sing with a university choir? You absolutely can!
The Michigan State University Choral Union will hold auditions for its 2012-13 season on Wednesday, August 29 and Wed., September 5, at 6 p.m. Auditions will take place on the MSU campus in Room 147 of the Communication Arts and Sciences Building, which is at the southeast corner of Red Cedar and Wilson. The first rehearsal will also be Wed., August 29, so those auditioning should be prepared to stay for rehearsal that evening.
Auditionees should be prepared to vocalize and sing the first verse of The Star Spangled Banner. Previous choral singing experience is desirable, but not required. No appointment is necessary but auditionees are asked to come at 6 p.m. for a general information session. Individual auditions will follow immediately.
The MSU Choral Union is conducted by David Rayl, director of choral programs at MSU. “The group is made up of adult singers from throughout the greater Lansing area,” says Rayl. “Its members come with a wide variety of musical experiences and abilities. The unifying element is theircommon love of choral singing.” The ensemble rehearses on Wednesday evenings, 7-9 p.m. from late August through April.
Members pay a $45 per semester registration fee and pay for their own musical scores. The 2012-13 season will include a performance of Brahms’ German Requiem on November 10, with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and Haydn’s Harmonie-Messe with the MSU Symphony Orchestra on April 27.
