I tried to teach them

I tried to teach them

Hey little youth, can I speak with you?
Wearing your jeans real saggy and your T-shirt too
And your favorite color is either red or blue
And you take a lot of pride in the name of your crew
Nobody better disrespect or there is no telling what you will do
Because you’re crazy! A little thug is in you.
You are ready to tune me out – because I’m bothering you
But I just need a minute – I don’t want to preach to you
I just want to share a few words and some comments with you
Because you grew up hearing lies and you only speak half-truth
You watch music videos starring these hustling dudes
They talk about drug sales, cristal and the extascy that they use
You emulate, but end up on the 10 o’clock news
Locked up or gunned down for stepping on the wrong shoes
Either way – mommy’s crying and singing the blues
And your friends will pour liquor, and time will cruise
You’re forgotten – Oh well – What’s the next issue?
Do you want to learn how to prevent this from happening to you?
Go to school, stay focused, and do what you have to do!
Don’t do drugs, or murders – blood doesn’t look good on you.
Watch your friends, and of course, watch your enemies too
It might be hard at first, but they’ll reveal themselves to you
Show respect – think fast and only trust a few
Money attracts people, but there is no telling what they will do
Or what they want, or what they say, might not necessarily be true
Ask for blessings in the night, and in the daytime too
And always love your life – it should be God first then you!
Because the path you take will lead to a new
Place in this world, but it’s all up to you
Maybe I’m wrong and I don’t have a clue
Like you said, “Who am I, to try to school you?”
But then again, I could be right and only want to see the best for you.
Or maybe, I’m your guardian angel. Wow! Who knew?
But, will I force you to do the things I said for you to do?
No way – the only one to make that decision is you
And be sure it’s the right one because it’s stuck with you
You can’t go back and change it, so now its time to choose!
