News Spotlight: Lansing Birthworkers Hosting Movie Screening raising awareness about Endometriosis

LANSING, MI — During Endometriosis Awareness Month (March), North Star Birthing Services will host a movie screening of Below The Belt, a social justice film about endometriosis. North Star Birthing Services aims to support birthing persons who are most at risk for poor health outcomes in maternal and infant health in Ingham County, particularly Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC).

Below the Belt exposes widespread problems in our healthcare systems. Through the lens of endometriosis, a disease that affects 1 in 9 women, the film shows how women are often dismissed, discounted & disbelieved. From societal taboos and gender bias to misinformed doctors and profit-driven healthcare, the film reveals how millions are effectively silenced and how, by fighting back, they can improve healthcare for everyone.

The screening will take place Wednesday, March 27th 2024 at the Potter Park Zoo Safari Room at 5:30pm followed by a guest panel questions and answer session.

Having a screening like this helps continue the conversation about reproductive justice in our community and letting folks find community and support within a health crisis,” explains Domonique Brace, co-owner and postpartum doula at North Star Birthing Services.

The intent of this movie screening is to educate the community about endometriosis and its impact on people’s lives while raising awareness of inequitable healthcare systems and practices around the disease. Our hopes are also that the movie will facilitate empathy and understanding for the audience so that they can recognize symptoms and make a difference for the people they know who are affected.
