Mariah Goes Def

After splitting from her label of less than a year, Virgin, and being wooed by a number of major record labels, Mariah Carey has inked a deal to form her own label with Island Def Jam.   Her own label is still unnamed. Carey is presently recording the followup to “Glitter.”  While at Sony Music she launched Crave Records, folding shortly thereafter.

Carey moved from Sony Music/Columbia to Virgin in April 2001, but was bought out for almost $30 million by Virgin in January after her “Glitter” soundtrack flopped.  While Carey’s last deal  with Virgin scored her $20 million to come on board and $30 million to leave, her new entrance fee is bigger this time.

Though no deal details have been released. Industry insiders believe Carey’s career can get back on track if she takes creative suggestions from veteran label executives, unlike her Virgin days where she called the shots.

Well, no guidance just yet, as Carey is already in the studio, and she hopes to release the new set on her yet-to-be-named label very soon.

“I’m incredibly happy,” Carey said of the deal, according to Hits Magazine.

Of the new CD, the 32-year-old Carey told the Hollywood Reporter that the new CD wouldn’t necessarily be “new-agey,” but will feature more live musicians and ballads.
