Nature enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to witness the spectacular “Butterflies Are Blooming” exhibition at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park every spring. Scheduled annually from March 1 through April 30, this event is the nation’s largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition.
Founded in 1995, the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park blends art and nature beautifully, providing an enriching environment that enhances the visitor experience. The butterfly exhibit is held in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, where over 7,000 tropical butterflies from around the world flutter freely in an 85-degree setting.
This event not only mesmerizes with its visual splendor but also educates the public about the fascinating life cycle of butterflies. A butterfly’s life unfolds in four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult. Each stage has unique characteristics and challenges, and the transformation from a crawling caterpillar to a vibrant flying butterfly, known as metamorphosis, remains one of the most striking natural phenomena.
Ingham County resident, Wendy Ezzo said, “Visiting Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is a great way to spend an afternoon and is only a short drive from Lansing. The entire place is beautiful, with impressive architectural detailing inside and out. The butterfly exhibit in the large conservatory, with massive plants, was mesmerizing and awe-inspiring. Also, the current art exhibits, which were so fascinating, greatly complement the butterfly exhibit. Lunch in their cafe was delicious, and they had great offerings on their menu.”
As you plan for next year, remember this breathtaking event. It is not just an exhibition; it is an experience that brings a bit of tropical warmth to the chilly spring in Michigan, making it a must-see for all ages.
