Meridian Township Recognizes Volunteers of the Year

Alexia Mansour and Bill McConnell Honored at Township Board Meeting

Meridian Township, MI – At the November 12 regular Township Board meeting, Alexia Mansour and Bill McConnell were each presented with a Volunteer of the Year Award for their contributions to Meridian Township.

The Volunteer of the Year program began in 2015 to acknowledge the exemplary volunteer work provided by Meridian Township’s Board and Commission members.

As a Meridian Township resident of ten years, Alexia Mansour has served on the Zoning Board of Appeals since 2018 and is currently the commission’s Chair.  She is originally from the Detroit area and received her Bachelor of Arts from Wayne State University. Mansour is currently a third-grade teacher at Hiawatha Elementary School in Okemos.

In addition to serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Mansour has contributed to youth empowerment in the community. Over the last five years, she has served on the board for the Bennett Woods Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization and as a leader for local Girl Scout troops.

“I am incredibly proud to serve on the Meridian Township Zoning Board of Appeals, as it is vital work that directly helps the citizens and businesses in my community,” said Alexia Mansour. “It is such an honor to have received this award, and my thanks go to the hardworking staff members in the building and planning department, and to all the board members I have served with.”

Bill McConnell is currently the Chair of the Environmental Commission, which he has been involved with since 2008. McConnell also serves on the Planning Commission and has held that role since 2020 also was awarded.

McConnell was an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences at Michigan State University (MSU). He has published multiple research articles on sustainability, land use, and land-cover change. He recently retired from his full-time role at MSU but remains active with the students. During his time on the Environmental Commission and Planning Commission, McConnell assisted with Meridian Township’s Climate Sustainability Plan and the Master Plan.

“I am constantly inspired by those around me who work for the betterment of our community, whether they be volunteers, elected officials, or Township staff. Thank you for this honor,” said Bill McConnell.
