Most Interesting and Influencial 2005: Larry Leatherwood

Executive Consultant/Trainer

 Larry Leatherwood retired as an Executive on Loan to the University of Michigan-Dearborn where he served as a lecturer and as Executive Director of the Public Administration Foundation, Inc..  Prior to his assignment at the university Mr. Leatherwood served in state government with the most recent position as the Deputy Director for Administration within the Michigan Department of Transportation.  Currently he is an Executive Consultant/Trainer working with private corporations and public and nonprofit agencies.
     Mr. Leatherwood has received numerous recognitions for his public service as well as his civic contributions.  Some include, Who’s who in Vocational Education, Who’s who Among Black Americans, Who’s who in America, Public Servant of the Year, Small Business Advocate for the U.S. Small Business Administration, Wall of Distinction Western Michigan University and State NAACP Council Recognition, Partners in Community Service Award, Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and the Fredrick Douglass award.  Received the Kevin D. Bibbs, “Distinguish Leader” Award from the Gentlemen of Distinction, Jack and Jill of Lansing. 
     Mr. Leatherwood’s past and present civic involvement include Founder/Chairperson, Uplift Our Youth Program, Vice President-Commissioner Martin Luther King Commission City of Lansing, Executive Committee Capital Area Health Alliance, Member, LCC M-Tech Committee, Co-Founder Capital City African American Cultural Association, Past Chair Metropolitan Lansing YMCA, Past Chairperson, Capital Chapter, American Society for Public Administration, Vice Chair, Sparrow Specialty Hospital, Public Policy Chair, United Way Of Michigan.
     He received his under graduate and Master’s of Public Administration degrees from Western Michigan University.  He also has been designated a Senior Executive Fellow after attending the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
     Larry is a member of Alpha Chi Boule and the Kappa Alpa Psi fraternities. He is married to Martha (Patricia) and has two adult children Jeffrey and Dr. Stacy Leatherwood.
