In December, MSU-AAAS’s speaker series “Re-negotiating Meaning in Black Studies Today” will present an event that advances knowledge about an African American holiday, Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates family, community, culture and consciousness. Our Kwanzaa intellectual-fest will engage the MSU campus and the Greater Lansing community in this African American heritage tradition. With “Soul Food” and a four person-faculty panel of African American & African Studies faculty, at this end of year event, we will practice and reflect on Kwanzaa’s African historical roots, its manifestation of African American cultural retentions, and its sociological meaning to the human community in terms of values and normative behavior.
