LANSING, MI – In May of 2013, the Lansing Police Department (LPD) began the Violent Crime Initiative (VCI). The Initiative is a collaborative effort between federal, state and local law enforcement, as well as prosecutors, courts and community members in the Capital Area Region.
The goal of the initiative is to assist our community in reducing violent crime, through a focused intelligence lead policing philosophy. Chief Green stated, “The Violent Crime Initiative aims to reduce homicides, assaults and target business robberies while collaborating with various stakeholders in all sectors of the city and other local, state and federal law enforcement partners to reduce violence in our community and hold offenders accountable”.
The VCI model strategically deploys law enforcement resources in the Capital Area, in an effort to reduce violent crime through pro-active policing. Emphasis is placed on the area’s most violent offenders and intelligence related to areas with significant levels of street level related violence.
In summer of 2020, LPD worked closely with members of the VCI, ATF and a MSP Secure Safe Cities Team, to conduct pro-active policing in the City of Lansing targeting “Hot Spots” and violent offenders.
Operational policing strategies included:
Data analysis of violent crime patterns
Outstanding warrant sweeps of violent offenders
Uniform and undercover focused enforcement of Violent Offenders
Traffic enforcement in Hot Spots and DDACTS Zone enforcement
As a result of the above collaborative work effort the following are statistics year to date:
Felony Arrest: 136
Misdemeanor Arrest: 28
Handguns Seized: 72
Long Guns Seized: 9
