News Spotlight: LCC SAYS: GET A SKILL, GET A JOB – OR YOUR MONEY BACK

LANSING, MI — Lansing Community College (LCC) is once again opening a unique two-week training program with a money-back guarantee if its graduates do not find jobs.

Participants will gain basic welding skills for an entry-level manufacturing job and learn the safe operations of oxyacetylene, torch cutting, plasma cutting, shielded metal arc welding, and gas metal arc welding. LCC will accept 15 applicants into the 64-hour program.

“Employers have repeatedly spoken about the difficulty of finding workers with the skills needed for today’s jobs,” said LCC President, Dr. Brent Knight. “On-the-job learning is very important, and we want to provide training through an intensive program that gets people ready for the workplace.”

Applicants must pass a pre-screen drug test as a requirement of the application process. After being accepted into the Get a Skill, Get a Job program, participants will sign a Learning Contract requiring 100 percent attendance and completion of all assigned work. After completing the program, participants must make a good faith effort to secure employment and provide proof to the college of their efforts. If they are unable to find a job within one year of completing the program, LCC will refund their money.

According to President Knight, the benefits of the program will extend to Michigan employers who are seeking skilled workers in the welding industry.

“We have worked closely with our regional partners to identify the growth areas and provide qualified workers to meet their specific employment needs,” Knight said. “This program is a win-win for all involved.”

The cost for the program is $250 and includes instruction, books, and supplies.

The Get a Skill, Get a Job training will be held at LCC’s West Campus. Applications are available online at lcc.edu/getaskill through Tuesday, December 16.
