News Spotlight – LCC to Host Annual K-6 Science and Math Exploration Event November 8

LANSING, MI — Elementary children in kindergarten through sixth grade in the tri-county area are invited to attend Lansing Community College’s (LCC) annual Science and Math Elementary Exploration Day (SMEE) on November 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

SMEE, formerly known as Elementary Science Olympiad, is a day for children to visit campus and experience in-depth, hands-on science and math activities. All activities are non-competitive with most utilizing ordinary classroom and household supplies.

“SMEE is a lot of fun, but that’s only part of our goal,” says Michael Nealon, dean of LCC’s Division of Arts and Sciences. “What we’re really trying to do is to engage every child in active discovery, to send them home with exciting new learning to share with their family and friends—and to hopefully instill in them a love of science and math. Today’s children are the architects of tomorrow’s world – a world that is ever-increasingly shaped by science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

More than 50 stations will be spread throughout LCC’s Arts & Sciences Building, where children can learn about everything from static electricity to superhero scienceMany of the stations, including demonstrations on tower building and digging for fossils will be staffed by LCC’s own faculty and student volunteers.

Registration and activities will take place in the Arts & Sciences Building on LCC’s Main Campus. The event costs $3 for children with an accompanying adults free. To view an activity schedule, please visit lcc.edu/science/youth_programs/smee/.
