EAST LANSING, Mich. — In a move that will increase security and make for a better game experience for fans, Michigan State University will institute a “no-bag” policy in Spartan Stadium.
The new policy will take effect at this fall’s first home game — Sept. 3 versus Youngstown State University.
Under the new policy, bags such as purses, diaper bags, camera and binocular cases, seat backs with pockets, and other similar bags will be prohibited from the 76,000-seat stadium.
“The inspection of bags and other items that fans bring into the stadium can be a time-consuming process, hindering their ability to enter the stadium in a timely manner,” said MSU Police spokesperson Sgt. Florene McGlothian Taylor. “This new policy will make for a safer environment and keep the lines moving more quickly.”
The only exception will be patrons with a medical or family need. They will be allowed to bring in items in a clear, one-gallon Ziploc bag.
Spartan Stadium was just one of many large facilities that were inspected last year by the Department of Homeland Security. Instituting a no-bag policy was one of the department’s highest recommendations for increasing security.
The policy will not be in effect for this year’s Green and White game, which is scheduled for April 30.
In addition, the bag policies for the Breslin Center and Munn Ice Arena are under review and may change in the future to be consistent with the no-bag policy of Spartan Stadium.
