Today, Richard Bernstein announced his candidacy for Attorney General among grass roots activists, leaders of issue and non-profit organizations, elected officials, family, and friends surrounded by those for whom he has made a difference.
Bernstein kicked off his campaign receiving the high-profile endorsements of Congressmen Mark Schauer (D-MI 7), Gary Peters (D-MI 9), and John Conyers (D-MI 14).
“I’m running for Attorney General to bring real change to Lansing. I have won high-stakes court cases on behalf of those who have been counted out. And I will fight for children, seniors and working families – and those who need protection from criminals, powerful corporations, negligent care-takers and scam artists. Enough is enough!” said Bernstein.
“During these tough times, we need a hard-nosed fighter serving as Michigan’s top law enforcement officer,” said Rep. Schauer during an announcement event in Lansing. “Richard is a no-nonsense leader who will stand up for working families, hold CEOs and government accountable, and protect consumers.”
In West Bloomfield, Congressman Gary Peters cited Bernstein’s advocacy for children as the reason for his support. “I learned first-hand of Richard’s tenacity in the early 1990’s when we fought against Governor Engler’s special education plan, and won. As Attorney General, Richard and I will work together to protect children from crime on the internet.”
Congressman John Conyers, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also announced his support of Bernstein today at the West Bloomfield event. “I am pleased to endorse Richard because he fights for what’s right and he fights for what’s just. Richard wins groundbreaking cases for those who’ve been counted out, and I know Detroiters and Michiganians couldn’t have a tougher crime fighter or consumer advocate serving as top cop.”
The endorsements of Schauer, Peters and Conyers are a significant boost for Bernstein as he seeks to win the Democratic Party endorsement at the April 17th party convention. That contest is won based upon delegate votes cast at the congressional district level.
Also in attendance at today’s events were Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, Sen. Irma Clark-Coleman, Bishop Edgar Vann, Reverend David Bullock, State Board of Education Member Elizabeth Bauer, Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner, activist Vicki Kovari, Oakland County Commissioner Marica Gershenson, and Detroit Charter Commissioner Reggie Reg Davis.
Bernstein’s announcement today follows his late December campaign committee filing that generated strong support across Michigan from citizens to elected officials to Democratic Party members (partial list attached). The campaign also launched www.BernsteinForMichigan.com, and is contacting thousands of party members through personal calls and activist kits to win their support.
