EATON COUNTY, MI — Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney Douglas R. Lloyd announced this afternoon that his office has charged two individuals with mail theft from dozens of locations in Delta Township. The charges are the result of an ongoing investigation by the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office and the keen observations of a Delta Township citizen.
Amber Sperbeck is charged with:
- Thirty-nine (39) counts of Mail Theft – Second Offense, a felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison, and
- One count of Improper Possession of an Absentee Ballot, a felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.
Michael Craig is charged with:
- Thirty-nine (39) counts of Mail Theft, a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of one year in jail, and
- One count of Improper Possession of an Absentee Ballot, a felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.
Sperbeck and Craig were arraigned on July 5, 2024, by 56A District Court Visiting Judge Julie Reincke (Ret), who set bond for both individuals at $50,000 cash or surety with a GPS tether prior to release on bond. The cases are scheduled for a probable cause conference on July 15, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. and a preliminary examination on July 22, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. in 56A District Court.
Prosecutor Lloyd noted, “Reports of mail theft have increased recently, and sadly have become rather common. These thefts lead to further fraud and theft from our citizens, often without the victims realizing that they have been victimized. My office will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to protect the People of Eaton County and hold accountable those who prey on our citizens. I encourage my fellow Eaton County citizens: please do not hesitate to report suspicious activity to law enforcement; your eyes and ears can be the key to stopping criminal activity in our communities.”
As in all criminal cases, the charges are merely accusations, and Sperbeck and Craig are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
