Joe’s Bakery & Coffee Shop is a family business serving Austin since 1962. The Avila family celebrates the traditions of the Mexican American culture from the food they serve and many patrons enjoy the recipes that they have been serving over the years.
[Mo:] Good morning or afternoon and “Bienvenido a Austin!”
[Jo:] Yes, after the experience of a 21 hour
drive, we finally made it to beautiful, sunny Austin.
[Mo:] All I can say so far is that it’s hot!!
[Jo:] That is an understatement, considering that our first day here registered a whopping 106 degrees! Nonetheless, we immediately surveyed our surroundings to find some good eats.
[Mo:] Our friend, Miguel took us to Joe’s Bakery and Coffee Shop on the East side of town. People here claim that they have the best tortillas and salsa in town. I must say that in the 7 days we’ve been here, we’ve been to Joe’s twice already!
[Jo:] Honestly, I expected that it would be empty due to the MAJOR construction going on but each time we’ve been it’s been packed!
[Mo:] Did you see last time; people were walking to Joe’s? In 95+ degree weather!!! I can’t say that I blame them. The service was quick and the minute you are seated, you receive a menu, water and coffee. Two seconds later, the salsa and warm salted chips arrived.
[Jo:] Yummmm…chips and salsa…I feel like I’m already developing an accent! I had the Huevos Rancheros (I said it like this…“weyvos ronchairos”); and Mo had the Huevos a la Mexicana. The Huevos Rancheros was two eggs with ranchero sauce served with beans, potatoes, fresh tortillas and choice of meat. The Huevos a la Mexicana was two eggs mixed with tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and served with beans, bacon and tortillas. All I can say is that my meal was muy buena!
[Mo:] It’s so funny that you said that you are developing an accent. I loved how you tried to ask for coffee in Spanish. How brave of you.
[Jo:] I thought I was being brave too – until the look of confusion registered on our server’s face.
[Mo:] Yeah – it seemed like she was saying, “Dude, stick with English”.
[Jo:] Ha haaaa! Next time, I’m gonna have it down!
[Mo:] The Huevos a la Mexicana was great. I love my bacon to be crispy and they did it just right! But this time I opted for Huevos Ranchero Plate but with sausage instead of bacon. I don’t know what was in the spicy ranchero sauce besides jalapeno peppers but I just couldn’t help myself! I think I used all of the homemade tortillas to sop it up!
[Jo:] Speaking of spicy, I think we will top off our Austin series with a “quote of the week”. This was a quote that we thought was really funny (although you may have had to be there to think so). When referring to salsa dancing and our desire to take lessons, we asked Miguel if he and his wife danced. He replied, “No. My salsa is just too spicy.”
[Mo:] Nuff said.
