“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” — C.S. Lewis
By André Pimenta
And suddenly another year is over. It seems that only yesterday we were doing our 2015 resolutions; the ones we broke within the first two weeks. New Year’s Eve is one of the most celebrated nights because we have a feeling of completion. It looks like one chapter of our life is ending while a new one is just around the corner; an empty book where we can write anything we want to. It’s funny to see everyone coming up with their lists of what they want to change about their lives starting January 1st, so I decided to come up with a list with my New Years Resolutions, which I hope to be useful for everyone; here it comes:
1.Don’t make New Year’s Resolution List:
I find New Year’s resolutions to be one of the most self-limiting ways people use to restrict life changing actions to be made in 1 day out of 365 we have every year. The right time to start making what you think you should be doing, or to start walking towards your goals is right now! We spend way too much time waiting for the right place, the right time, the opportunity or the resources. We think too much about what we should have done, thinking that we should have started doing something a long time ago and now can be too late now. Whatever changes you feel like you have to do in your life, start now! Don’t wait for an hypothetical date in the future where you’ll let the future “You” take care of the problem; take care of it as soon as you can and forget New Year’s Eve marks the passage from one year to the other. It’s a made up calendar, it just the mark of yet another lap (roughly) of the Earth around the Sun; and No, the movement of the Planets and Starts doesn’t determine your destiny. You do!
2.Read more:
The sense of thrill and enthusiasm of reading a good book has no equal. Whether it is a Romance, Technical, Biography, etc., or even an article like this one. It will make you learn new stuff, think about things from another perspective and even things you never thought about before. Reading will enrich your culture and vocabulary, enabling you to communicate more efficiently with people around you, and sharing the knowledge you acquire. Maybe one day you can even write a book yourself and become a part of this cycle where everyone is a winner.
3.Exercise and get fit:
No, stop thinking about that big promotion gym membership plan you just saw yesterday! Gyms became a trend in the turn of the century, pilling up on our insecurities and profiting from it. Without people who pay and end up not showing up more than once or twice a month, gyms would barely break even. Instead you should start running, jogging, power-walking; anything that can get you out of your couch and onto the streets to get some fresh air. Exercising isn’t about being a professional athlete; it’s about being healthy and feeling energetic every day. Sometimes we tend to think that it’s not worth it if we just have half an hour to get some exercise. When this though goes through your mind remember this golden rule: Every mile you walk/run is one mile more than you do in front of your TV!
4.Learn something new every day:
Our thirst for knowledge brought us to a society where the power comes from information and knowledge! The place of muscles has been taken by the brain. Maybe you always wanted to learn how to play the guitar, how to grow your own food; or maybe you have a curious mind and like to explore a lot of different fields. The act of learning everyday makes us happy, confident and more interesting people. After some time, we become that person who all of us have in their life. Basically the guy everyone went to when they had a question before Google.
5.Think Big, Change the World:
Share your ideas, get involved with your community! All Humans crave being understood and felling that they belong to a greater cause. Find people who share your interests, ask questions, aim high and don’t be afraid of rejection. It will happen but you just have to keep walking! Use the strength both from those who believe in you and those who say you’re going to fail. Refuse to be just another person who walks a lifetime on this Planet making absolutely no difference.
“Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word.” — Goran Persson
