Suspect Charged After Shots Fired Incident Prompts Secure Mode at Pleasant View School

LANSING, MI  — An 18-year-old Lansing man has been formally charged after authorities say a shooting incident outside Pleasant View School on April 29,2026 triggered a district-wide emergency response, forced families to urgently retrieve students, and placed the Lansing Learning Hub (Pleasant View) and Capitol Area K-12 Online building under secure mode for several hours.

According to Lansing School District communications sent to families throughout the day, reports of shots fired outside the Pleasant View building at 4501 Pleasant Grove Road prompted immediate security protocols around 9:33 a.m. Lansing Police were dispatched to the scene, and the building was secured while law enforcement investigated. District officials informed families that no one inside the building was injured, but students remained under supervision until approved guardians or emergency contacts arrived for pickup.

Testing scheduled for that day was postponed, and district officials later lifted secure mode at 12:18 p.m. after authorities determined the building was safe.

Following the investigation, Lansing Police identified the suspect as Howard Davis Jr., 18, of Lansing. The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office has authorized multiple felony charges in connection to the incident.

Davis is charged with:

• Assault with intent to murder
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Weapon-free school zone violations (two counts)
• Carrying a weapon with unlawful intent
• Felony firearm (three counts)

Authorities allege the shooting occurred on school grounds and involved individuals who are both students at Pleasant View School.

A magistrate in 54-A District Court set bond at $750,000.

Davis is scheduled to appear before Judge Stacia J. Buchanan for a probable cause conference on May 14, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a preliminary examination on May 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

The probable cause conference will assess whether sufficient evidence exists for the case to move forward, while the preliminary examination will determine whether the matter proceeds to trial.

The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
