The Friends of Michigan History, Inc. and the Michigan Historical Center are partnering to put on a Symposium on April 6, 2013 at the Michigan Historical Center, which is located at 702 West Kalamazoo Street in downtown Lansing. The all day event is done as part of the Sesquicentennial commemoration of the American Civil War (1861-1865).
The theme for this day of presentations, lectures and exhibits is: “1863 The Turning Point of the Civil War.”Historians often refer to this colossal struggle as the “Irrepressible Conflict.” This period is one of the most if not the most tumultuous time in this young nation’s history. Participants will be transported back in time to that turbulent period as they interact with costumed interpreters and re-enactors.
There is a wide array of presenters with a wealth of knowledge to share with registrants. Some of the topics that will be presented includes: women during the war and women who fought in the war; food during this time period; the international intrigue as to who would intervene in American affairs; recent books on the war, and George Armstrong Custer and the Michigan Cavalry Brigades. The focal point of the day will be presentations on the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1-3, 1863) the three bloodiest days of the war and the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi (May-July 4, 1863). These two events psychologically and physically turned the tide of the war in favor of the North.
Many of the presenters have spent the better part of their lives studying these four years in the life of this Nation. This program has something for everyone and it will be packed with information for the novice as well as the diehard Civil War scholar.
