LANSING, MI – Flint native and Michigan State University and University of Michigan Ann Arbor alumna, India Young, created Buttercreme Beauty in 2017. When she developed dark and scaly eczema patches, she became concerned and began to search for a product that would relieve her dry, irritated, and cracked skin.
Young has a full-time mental health and substance use therapist position but she said that her skin issues made her feel insecure about showing off her skin when flareups seemed unbearable.
She said, “I invested so much money into store-bought products and the results weren’t worth it. While I found some products to be better than others, they all lacked longterm moisture and actual skin absorption. Long story short, I still felt dry even right after applying what was supposed to provide relief. Because of my experience with other products, I wanted to create a brand whose primary focus was long-lasting moisture.”
Because of her passion for helping others through advocacy, community organizing and social services with a love for the arts (beauty, fashion, dance), Young set out on a journey to make a product primarily geared towards those who suffer from dry and sensitive and eczema prone skin. The key to Buttercreme Beauty’s success was providing customers with a product that would not be clumpy or too greasy.
Creating Buttercreme Beauty was a dream come true and a labor of love. The dessert-themed collection, said Young, expresses the need to treat yourself because you deserve it. The natural skincare line was inspired by other women-owned beauty brands that have made their mark in the industry.
Young said, “Special recognition goes to brands, Mielle Organics and The Lip Bar because they have taken us on their journey of success. Through them, we have been able to experience the importance of building.”
Buttercreme Beauty creates a variety of body butter frostings, whipped body crèmes, body sugar scrubs, body glaze oils and a host of face & lip care products made with natural ingredients.
They are transparent about all of theingredients, production processes and supply changes.
Young said this process is pivotal to success because they value their customers. Being honest about their products is the first step in providing exceptional customer service and repeat purchasers.
